Mitt Romney recently began a telephone campaign in Iowa that is meant to attack Rick Perry on his immigration record. So what is the issue? The fact that Perry had signed a bill allowing in-state tuition for undocumented residents of Texas. Now, say what you will but is this really the issue that Romney should be attacking? I mean, I’m not a huge fan of Gov. Perry, but the arguments he has made in support of this bill are persuasive if not all together true. So let’s assume that the Lone Star state decided not to provided in-state tuition for undocumented residents, what then? They aren’t going anywhere. Our immigration system is broke and congress is not in any hurry to fix it. So why not help these kids out and ourselves by providing them with an education and a chance at becoming contributing members of our society. Why shut them out? Without an education they will be far more likely to become a burden on the state. I know many, many beneficiaries of this bill and even without documents they are still some of the most dynamic and innovative entrepreneurs and individuals I know. They contribute to our social, economic and moral fabric. If the Dream Act ever passes I am sure some of them will grace the covers of Forbes and Fortune.
